I wanted to see this movie when it first came out in last December, but Feimo ruled it out because he thought it would be a cheesy chick flick. Well, I didn’t fight with him (yes sometimes we have to fight on which movie to go to!!) because the trailer wasn’t intriguing enough anyway. So we didn’t go, and we waited till Netflix sent us the DVD today (yes we are still watching it as it has Hilary Swank in it!!). But if we had gone, it would’ve been worth every penny.
It’s still a chick flick, but a “grand” one (pardon my Irish – there’s too much of it in this movie). I wept & laughed through the entire movie. Yes, you didn’t hear it wrong – I kept bursting into tears and laughter alternately, like a switch being turned on and off all the time. I haven’t felt like this for a long while – this movie reactivated all the dormant cells of emotions in my body and they were running wild like an unsupervised herd.
Ok. Enough foreplay. Why is this movie so special (and a bit bipolar maybe given the crying/laughing behavior in the audience ~.~) ? It’s actually nothing special. The plot is even cliché if you look at with your cynical eyes – a woman married an Irish man for 9 years and he died of brain tumor; after his death, he miraculously sent letters to his luv (pardon my Irish again) and these letters kept her through the most difficult time of her life; she rebounded with rigor and confidence, and went on to embrace the life ahead of her. Sounds banal, doesn’t it? But the way the story is told completely captures my heart – the smooth juxtaposition of the past the present, the humor, the music, the vibrant and loving husband (the male lead was Gerard Butler, what more do you need?), and of course, the beautiful Hilary Swank.
Gosh, I wish I could say more, but I would hate it if I divulged any detail. So let’s just leave it at that – a chick flick that triggers both your lachrymal glands and whatever brain mechanisms responsible for laughter (tell me if you know). If you want to see whether it works on you, go get the DVD and make your own ruling. ~.~
